I think that Dicks's gloss in the novelization betrays an anxiety about the decision to cast Bennett, still.

Analytical fandom is still out there; a number of patient people toil in the salt mines of the former Outpost Gallifrey, but it can take a long time to find them.Matthew Kilburnhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16994266455623606284noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7861793956159743524.post-32107995195889350922008-11-08T23:42:00.000+00:002008-11-08T23:42:00.000+00:00Interesting review, although I was not quite convi...Interesting review, although I was not quite convinced by your defence of John Bennett's casting. Do you intend to post more old fanzine pieces?

I mean to get round to digging out the magazine he is seen reading at one point, issue 917 of Blackwood's Edinburgh Magazine; considering the care taken with the Doctor Who of this period the choice of periodical could well have been deliberate.

If I recall correctly, he is also seen to read a copy of The Strand Magazine, that being the publication that first printed most of the Sherlock Holmes stories, although I don't know if there is any particular significance to the issue seen.

Regarding your general point at the start about a consensus emerging regarding old stories by default, this would seem to have been over-taken by events, and not in the obvious way that the new series has added new material to discuss. Fandom, both on-line and in DWM, seems to me much less analytical than it was even just a few years ago.Daniel Saundershttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07087956908558706584noreply@blogger.com
